I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt...This is so far off reality, I doubt he was purposely giving you false information or didn't understand.
Some of the 1/2 tons have a "tow rating" of 10-11k lbs...he may have simply misspoke and meant 10-11 1000lbs rather than 10-11 tons.
