Buying a travel trailer out of my home state.

We purchased a brand new T.T. in Indiana and did not pay sales tax until it was time to register the unit in Illinois, and depending in which county you live that's the percentage of sale tax you pay in Illinois.;)

About 15 years ago, when I lived in Ohio, I bought a car in Maine. After paying the seller and getting the keys, title, etc., I went to a Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles office and obtained a temporary tag to drive it home to Ohio. No tax due in Maine.

Back home in Ohio, I paid the Ohio tax and obtained an Ohio title and registration.

Simple enough. I can’t imagine it would be any more difficult for a TT. Search for the Maine BMV and see what the web site says the process is today. Or give them a call.

The folks with truck campers might read this thread and have a good laugh. A truck camper has no registration, so you simply buy in a state with no sales tax. Yes, I know about use tax. :W

In Kentucky, if we buy an out of state NEW travel trailer, we have to have a Certificate of Origin and the dealer must fill out a form for Kentucky Sales Tax which is then paid at the time of initial registration. If it is a used unit, then we have to have a title, bill of sale and the RV must be inspected by the KY Manufactured Housing Department.

Dealer hauled it six miles from Indiana to Illinois which does have reciprocal tax with NC.

It would depend on how things are done in Maine. We live in GA and bought our last 2 RVs in NJ. The first was a Class C Motorhome that we financed. The dealer gave us a check to cover the sales tax. We gave the Tax Collector the check when we registered the Motorhome in GA (in my county in GA, vehicle registrations are done at the County Tax Collector's office not the DMV). The second RV is our current TT that we paid cash for. The Dealer did not charge us sales tax. We had to pay it when we registered our TT in GA.

When we registered the Motorhome in GA, we actually had to write a second check. At the time, NJ did not charge sales tax on documentation fees, however GA did. So we had to pay the $15 or so sales tax on the $300 or so Documentation fees.

Every state is different. I bought both of my RV's (2007 and 2017) in Mississippi. I live just across the state line in Tennessee. I paid NO sales tax when buying the RV's. I paid all of the sales tax when I registered them in Tennessee.

You need to check. Some states do not have reciprocal taxes, meaning that you can wind up paying sales tax in both state.
