I think whole trailer surge suppressors are a complete waste of money! If you have a sensitive device like a laptop or a TV then use a cheap plug in surge suppressor. The trailer wide protecting surge suppressors are are a complete rip off and won't protect your laptop as well as an outlet type surge suppressor.
Would you mind expounding?

The clamping voltage and response time on a whole trailer suppressor has to be much higher than that of a device specific suppressor. A device specific suppressor will shunt a surge much quicker than a whole trailer unit at a much lower voltage level.
With a whole trailer unit you are paying to protect systems that do not need protection. An AC unit will handle a huge voltage spike without any damage. AC motors have a large ability to handle voltage spikes with no issues.
A device specific suppressor will insulate your delicate laptop / TV (They are not nearly as delicate as surge suppressor sellers would have you believe) from heavy power drawing spike inducing systems like your AC kicking in. With a whole trailer suppressor your AC is on the same side of the protection as your laptop so there is no isolation between the AC and the laptop.
If a simple inexpensive plug in MOV suppressor is not able to protect your device... chances are nothing else will.
