All pickup trucks in California are registered as commercial, with certain narrow exceptions. In California, any vehicle registered as commercial must stop at all scales again with certain exceptions. One of the exceptions is if the truck is a "pickup truck" as defined by the DMV. To meet that definition it must be less than 8001 lbs unladen weight, and less than 11,501 lbs GVWR. Also, it must have a standard pickup bed, not a flat bed or a utility bed. That means most 1T dually or crew cab pickups manufactured after about 2011 or so are required by law to stop at scales - though almost none do.
It doesn't matter if you are getting paid.
