CA form 4008

Hi guys. We just purchased a new truck listed in sig. The dealer has sent me a DMV form 4008 which is a declaration of gross vehicle weight/combined gross vehicle weight.

Essentially I need to sticker my truck used for non-commercial use in the same way a commercial driver would and pay an additional fee to do so.

Not really thrilled with the idea of stickering my truck.

Is this something new? Just in CA?

Getting ready to find a new state to call home...

  • Also not understand why I am required to weight the truck now, empty.. What could this possible have to do with the price of tea in China?

    Excluded Pickup Trucks

The unladen weight of a pickup cannot exceed 8,000 pounds and its GVW rating must be less than 11,500 pounds

Otherwise it is registered as 'commercial'

    PU Trucks with Camper

If PERMANENTLY attached it CAN be registered as a 'housecar'

Otherwise 'commercial' registration ie: camper is a 'load'

    CA Commercial Vehicles

Yes, I am aware. My previous 2 trucks were also labeled commercial by the DMV but until now I have never had to declare GVW and CGW as well as pay an additional fee and apply stickers to my doors. I assume with stickers means I have to go through the scales?

Tempted to just check off vehicle operated under 10,000 pounds and take my chances. The fee is $332. That's sucks but I can deal with that. I suppose I could pay the fee and just keep the stickers in the glovebox....
  • So in Cali my dually isn't considered a pickup? Just adds to the strangeness of the state. lol
