Thinking - dreaming - about maybe a new truck ... GM.The 1500 GMC and Chevy page shows what it calls a Double Cab, which looks like the X-Cab in older trucks.But, the 2500HD, shows ONLY regular cab and crew cab, with different boxes.You all know, the 1500 just ain't gonna cut it for the larger RV's, and especially hauling a truck camper. Does anyone know for sure, positive, that GM will eventually offer the Double Cab (X-cab style) in the 2500HD? Make no sense that such a widely sold style will disappear.And, it makes more sense for a 1500 to offer only crew cab, as the 2500HD is more of a working vehicle, and not so much a family PU. SO, it makes much more sense to keep the 2500HD as the X-cab style.Course, to me, what do I know, they quit making the best sized van too awhile ago, the Safari... I know for certain, I will not buy a Crew Cab, ever - would go back to the regular cab (yuck) first, but would surely miss that rear space. Regular cab - hmmm, maybe not!! But it's sure disappointing to see NO X-cab version.

don't know why you are so dead set against the crew cabs, you can throw a lot of stuff in that back seat.

The new extended cab have 4 doors just like the crew cabs. They look the same from a quick glance but the extended cab is shorter than the crew and the doors are narrow enough that my 250# really can't get in the door. Chassis specs show they are now calling the old extended cab "Double cab". I do not think you can get it on a 2014 2500. The HD's are in process of being redone and will be sold as 2015 trucks starting in Feb I think. Randu

Just tried to buy a extended cab for a GMC 2500, if you want one new your going to have to buy a 2013 leftover. I'm told they won't make a extended for a few years and maybe more. As much as I would like to stick with GM I may switch to a Ford 2500. 2015 GMC will be out soon I'm told after the first of the year with some impressive tow ratings on the 1500 series if this will fit your trailer.

campercoop -- tow rating mean nothing to me, it's payload. we haul a truck camper, not tow a trailer. Although we sometimes tow a "toy trailer"Crew Cab -- it's mostly about the look, and I believe the crew cabs are longer or larger, or something. I like the shorter view/look, like the X-cab before and what the 1500 now calls the Double Cab - but, unavailable in the 2500HD.I know, "dead set against the Crew Cab" - maybe it's just me (well, it is me :) ) but it always looks to me like a Crew Cab is a 4-door car/SUV with a bed on it. I know, it ain't, but it's not a look that appeals to me - for whatever reason. And if I'm going to spend that much, it should be what I like -- so, will wait it out. Not in a hurry, maybe the 2015 will have the X-cab style option. Remember when (I think it was a Tacoma) had the rear storage area, without a side door ... that's what I liked then too, just the space, not the seat. We run with the seat up anyway, and carry 'stuff' back there. Doors are nice, of course, and convenient, but not the double-size doors - Probably a better option with family and kids - but not anymore for us. We're done with that :)

The X-cab is best for working trucks 2500HD and 3500 ... not for a family.

Yes, I said camping families for the Crew Cab or Double Cab - and for families with large RV's or trailers. But that's a minority of actual 2500HD truck buyers - RV'ers in general are not a large group in this country, based on the population. And, most that do, buy the 1500 versions.

So, that's why I believe the X-cab version of the 2500HD will be missed - course, that's just me, and often end up in a minority anyway - like carrying a TC instead of towing TT or 5er.

Both are similar in size to ext cab but they have real door. They both offer larger crew cab with larger doors. GM is only catching up to them. Ford will eventually follow. I actually own a GMC 2500HD Ext cab and would love to have an ext cab with real door...structurally they are a lot more solid.

The 6.5' bed, crew cab platform is EXTREMELY popular with camping families that have a large trailer to tow, and 2-3 growing children.

The X-cab really doesn't have enough legroom, even for small children in car seats, and you know children don't get any smaller as time goes on. Most families will climb in a crew cab, and won't look back.

X-cab is probably doomed to extinction within the next 10 years.

Interesting, for years and years it's been the "go to" truck configuration. And now, suddenly, someone decides it's unsafe.

Maybe, just maybe, the double or crew works better for a light truck buyer with a family - and needs to hauls stuff in the bed, and have room for the kids - thus the 1500/150 market and dual cabs options.

But, it makes much less sense in the 2500/3500 market as those are working trucks generally - and less likely to appeal to the family set. We RV'ers are a different breed, so have unique needs in hauling more weight, but would bet we are the lesser buyers in the truck markets, and most 2500/3500 trucks appear in working positions - farms, ranches, heavy construction. So the space behind the seat is more for storage than kids in that market. Most don't take the kids to works with them.

There was rumor a few months ago that GM was going to do away with extended cabs (now Double cab) on the new body style 2500/3500 line due to low demand. This appears to confirm that rumor.

Extend cabs will probably go away due to new crash standards. Without the B column they have a hard time meeting the criteria.

I'm not looking to buy a truck camper, I already own one. And it doesn't need a dually ... been hauling TC on my GMC 2500 ever since it was born. No issues ... including Rocky Mountains for numerous trips.

Real world defeats theory once again.

A truck camper and 2500HD???? Why are you not looking at 3500 DRW truck. You then can haul the largest truck campers made. The 2500HD is really going to limit you to a 8-9.5 footer. DRWs are not a width issue with a truck camp, they are a huge plus, both in stability and load carrying capacity.
