Calif. Requirements for a 1 Ton Pickup & Fiver

Hi guys,

Can any of you california guys tell me how the DMV treats a 1-ton pickup (for personal use) in our great state?
I am looking at a new truck and a new fiver that is just under 10,000lbs
The DMV web site was less than helpful.

What I'm trying to fine out is if something other than a Class C is required?
Do you get dinged more on the registration?

Many thanks,

Bill

  • I'm only answering this question in regards to a 5th wheel only. TT have different requirements;

An Endorsement is needed (Restriction 41) for a Class C licence if the GVWR is 10,001 lbs -15,000 lbs of the 5th wheel.

A Non Commercial Class A is needed for over 15,001 lbs GVWR

If you get a ticket with a Restriction 41 you can go to traffic school if you have the non commercial Class A no traffic school opportunities and points to your licence.

As far as the 1 ton it is based on unladen weight. Our '05 F350 cost us over $350 to register and that is cheap as we bought it used and a very good deal. Most are paying a lot more. It won't go down much because of the unladen weight fees.

I have a 3/4 ton, and when I moved here from Colorado, I had to get the truck weighed... part of the registration fee is based on that weight, so yes you will get dinged extra for it.

Your class C is good for towing a 5er up to 15K lbs... it's not until you tow doubles or surpass that weight that you would need a different class license ( I think a non-commercial class A).

The DMV website has a neat little chart of vehicles and trailers and weights that tell you what you are able to tow with the different license classes.

    Bad info!!!!!
California requires an endorsement if the 5er is over 10,000 GVWR, that is not Dry weight but the max the 5er is rated to Carry!

I bought a 2013 3500 gmc last year and I had to sign a DMV form that I would not use the truck to tow over a specific weight (I can't remember the number, but I remember being surprised how low it was). I signed the form and I do believe that it had an effect on the total fees. As far as your driver's license, there is no issue.
I'll try to find the DMV form and get you the form number so you can look it up on the DMV website.

  • CA registers pickups as 'commercial' so you pay an additional fee plus registration fee.
Registration fees based on GVWR and unladen weight
