I can't feel sorry for a "ribbon cutter" as they're called, getting busted. Being a lifelong motorcycle rider, I've often wanted to be able to write a citation that cost 10X what yours was as I've had friends run off the road (and injured) by folks that can't keep their rig under control. Sorry, no sympathy here.....

I am impressed the majority supports the CHP. Maybe a little known fact --- the CHP receives NO money from cites, overweight fines etc. It is 100% funded from DMV fees. It accounts for about 26% of the DMV budget. No quotas just safety. They do get funded by traffic control and escort for oversize loads, filming on roadways etc. BTW all fines etc go to local cities and counties where violation occurred. Joke is a safe speeder on left and expired reg on right the steering wheel pulls to the right on all their cruisers!!!

We have driven different portions of Hwy 89 many times. Don't know what section you were on, but as I recall the road has standard 12' travel lanes with 2, 4 or 8 foot paved shoulders and a shoulder stripe. I don't recall any curves that would have required me to maneuver across the center line. Some of the more remote state highways are not as wide and I sure hope the CHP would use a bit of discretion on those.

To answer your question it is public safety, pure and simple. You can NOT cross a double yellow, into oncoming traffic at any time, for any reason. If your rig precludes your ability to maintain your lane on any road you should not be on that road.

What is the other driver suppose to do when rounding a corner and finding you in his lane? You're lucky you weren't sighted for reckless driving which carries higher point count and fine. Maintaining your lane is not just a good idea.... It is the law.

I have had it happen to me a couple of times in Ontario of late this past year with drivers partly in my lane on a curve and I will give them my horn to give me back my clear lane or get the heck off the road. There is no need for this kind of sloppy driving. I am glad tickets are being given out for drivers who do it more then once on a road. Cheers christl
