Well, it's been a few years since our initial visit to Michican. I'm thinking it might be time to return to see if that Lake Michigan water is really as blue as I remember it ... and, yes, to try some of those pasties now that I know they're not something one wears :W Any recommendations on where to find good pasties? We're definitely going to explore the northwest portion of the lower peninsula and will go from there as time allows. Was looking at Ludington State Park and would like to go back to Sleeping Bear Dunes and Wilderness State Park. We like natural areas with opportunity for photography, hiking, and tranquility. We also like places with historical interest. The DB may join us and he likes to do some more remote travel with his TC, boondocking, and maybe do some dune/beach camping if there is anyplace one can do this there. I got some good ideas from you all last time that I'll revisit but thought you might have some more ideas knowing our interests and the particular area we'll be visiting.

Trolls do not eat pasties. That's why there trolls.Best ones when I lived up in Iron MT. We're the ones made by my aunt.I make my own. Even my DW likes the ones I make.

There you have it, the best UP pasties are in TN at rvten's house. What time can we stop by for some of those, Tom? :D

Have be in the fall. Stuck up in the Flat Lands of IL. Right now.

Ludington is nice, so is Manistee, Muskegon, Grand Haven, Holland. All have state parks where you can camp and walk to the beach. It may be a little cosy but there are only so many spots and lots of demand. I like Frankfort/Alberta myself but I live in GH so I like to drive 100 miles to get away. About 50 miles inland is the vast Manistee national forest lots of nice State and federal campgrounds, most are on a lake or river. The up is the up when I go up I hit Oswalds Bear Ranch, Fayett State Park (old coal smelting town), pictured rocks, the locks, big spring, many more. Bring bug spray. Mi is great this time of year cool nights, warm days, not hot, miles of shorline, lighthouses etc. I think you never more than 5 miles from a lake or stream. Come on up we need the $.

This is great hearing about a particular dish that I enjoyed at my aunt and uncles house in Bessemer (10 miles west of Wakefield) in my youth. My dad grew up there (Bessemer) and his dad worked in the mines after arriving from Austria. I've heard about the large enclave of Welch folks in Nevada City and Placerville and couple of real nice pasty shops there. My brother and I want to return to Bessemer and visit some old areas around there and of course drop into a pasty shop. Sadly, my dad and aunt and uncle have passed on long ago.

Pretty smart we are being Trolls living down here in the lower peninsula and sometimes adding goodies of our choice on our pasties, right?

That's cause those are made and sold in the lower peninsular.....we use gravy down here and sometimes ketchup too. :W

Bedlam, maybe your friends just didn’t want to see you cry when it was time to leave the UP :D Ishpeming sure is way up there, JoeChiOhki, but if I make it that far I’ll definitely give Lawry’s a try. Well, FreeLanceing, I did get to see the OUTSIDE of the Whitefish Point Museum on our first trip to MI as we were there before it opened for the season. It would be nice to see the INSIDE for a change. Now I never think of a dish like pasties when I think of CA, jefe_4x4, but I guess a few miners DID find their way there some years ago :W I agree, Sherrifdoug, there’s nothing like good homestyle food after being far away from home for a spell. Now all I need is some smell-a-vision, rvten! Wowee! Wakefield is REALLY far up there BamaFire_Joe. But Helena AL is a lot closer so how about I just swing by your place after I leave from rvten’s :B

On our last trip to the UP we went to Randalls (sp?) Bakery in Wakefield. Hmmmmm good. Just like the wife makes.

Since 1850 with the influx of Welch miners, Nevada City, CA, in the heart of Gold Country, has been the Pastie capital of the West. They're everywhere. More pastie places than Mcdonalds around these parts, pardiner. They are like old sourdough starter, they have a timeless style all their own.
