pjay9- the 25K I referenced is what I had been told for a complete garage done all at once including floor, 4 foot footings, garage, doors, etc based on total square footage. Then the town wants taxes based on the value and SF each year. This is a $6500 metal truss "Carport" as far as the town is concerned because it is open on at least 2 sides and will cost basically nothing on my taxes. I don't mind taxes if I get something back but what I pay now for a volunteer fire department/ambulance, police dept that is not staffed 24/7, and a decent school system is all I want to pay. So.... in the letter of the law if not the spirit of the law here is my garage: 24x31 metal truss as stated. I am NOT enclosing it it with "Sheds" that will give me an additional 6 ft wide x 98 linear feet U shaped storage area. A shed in this area that does not require a building permit and is not taxed is 200sf or less. Therefore "Unattached sheds" butted up against three sides and actually sitting on the carport footings are with in the spirit of the law. Per my building inspector. So picture the 24x31 with a wing down the left side that is 6x31, a wing across the back that is 6 by 36, and a wing down the right side that is also 6x31. These are open to the interior allowing the typical garage storage that eats up most peoples garage floor space. The left wing front half is for snowmobiles and snowblower in the summer (motorcycles, tractor, lawn mower in winter) and the back half for my wife's hay and food for her alpacas. This section will be fully enclosed to keep the dust down. The wing across the back will be tool storage. The right wing rear for reloading and right front for my fishing gear, golf clubs, etc.

Hopefully the picture will show up. This is basically how it will end up looking But the sides will of course be narrower than this pic shows. This will allow me to do this over the summer and fall as money and time allows. I will not owe anything and it will have little cost to me down the road. I also already own 1/2 the wood needed to make my "Unattached sheds". It will have a cement floor but not until next summer. The front wall will be attached and have 2 roll up doors. Each wing will have an entry door and windows (that I also already own) for cross ventilation.
Yes I am being cheap. Yes I refuse to finance this. Yes I will do what I can to keep my already too high taxes from being even higher. (Remember NH doesn't have sales or income tax so they have to soak us on property taxes) But this will be weather tight and provide us with everything we need at a reasonable cost and some sweat equity. Yankee ingenuity at it's best. Very excited to see it hit the ground as we have done a lot of site work and the blasted winter we had delayed it from being stated last fall.
