I also at first read if camper moved away from tiedown it would tighter not looser, but it sounds like you must have a pretty good angle, outboard at top, on tiedown, so as camper moves away the distance between mounts decreases (becoming more vertical), opposite side does get tighter-exerting more force.
Your are correct: The tiedowns are more outboard at the top and inboard at the bottom.
Looks like I can't depend on the tiedowns to keep the camper centered relative to the truck box. As some have suggested, some spacers between the outside of the camper and the inside of the truck box are probably the most dependable way to keep the camper centered.
