If not you'll need to come up with something compatible that's powered by 12 volts or batteries. If it's AM modulated it probably wouldn't be too hard. If it's FM it will be more difficult to find something.
A lot of the cheaper ones were in the unlicensed 27 Mhz band similar to kid's walkie talkies.
The other issue is whether the base portion is solid state or tube.
Somewhere here I have a bunch of old Sam's photo facts from that era that may have the schematics. Get the model info on the unit and I see what I can find.
If you aren't able to get the original working and want to keep the intercom you can buy a $12 pair of FRS radios and modify one to work in the original intercom case.
Interesting project either way.
The one we had was hard wired. There was a small cable to attach in addition to the main umbilical.
