Working in house remodeling I have seen lot of things that "work" but I would never consider them safe.
Seeing all the crack on wood "sealing rings" in linked post, brings some of those memories.
Sheetmetal behind the stove will not help much when you have it lined against plastics and vinyl.
You need 5/8" drywall or even better Wonderboard for fire safety.
