Camping or Football?
Do Both With a TC!
Fall is my favorite time of year to camp. Weather is cooler, less crowds, campgrounds are mostly empty, leaves are changing color, no left over snowpack that prohibits access like spring camping does however you can still experience all 4 seasons in a single day if the conditions are right.
For anyone with kids fall is also the time of year for attending sporting events. Many of these are inconveniently scheduled out of town and on weekends when one could be out camping instead.
A truck camper provides the perfect solution to this problem. You can enjoy an afternoon football game watching your son play and in then less than a half hour after the final buzzer goes off you can be at a new camping spot that you've never been to. It's a win win, even if the team lost :(
This last weekend we did just that by traveling to La Pine, Oregon for a football game. Although I lived for 3 years in a truck camper in a hospital parking lot in Idaho we didn't stay in the parking lot at the school. Not enough trees or water!
We stayed Friday in a small, nearly empty campground on the outskirts of town by the river. We got there right before dark so I didn't get many pictures. My kids even talked their mother into going, she's not much into camping but with the Arctic Fox she was willing to risk it. So Brave!! :B
My Daughter, her friend and my son eating s'mores
Then we headed off to the game in the morning.
Once the game ended it was about a 15 mile drive up the mountain to Paulina Lake campground. All the services were shut off and the out houses locked up which is fine by me. No campground host and everything was winterized. Also no fee to pay which is normally $18/ night as near as I could tell. That's for a place to park, a table and fire pit.
There were only a few other campers in the campground and we had a whole section to ourselves where the kids could run around and be kids and not bother anyone. This trip we brought our bikes and after dinner we went for a ride along the lake shore.
My son had to put on a tire repair clinic for his sister and her friends bikes before we could go ride though.
Paulina Lake
My children and I
It started raining a little and then this beautiful double rainbow appeared. It was so big I couldn't get it all in one picture.
Outlet creek of the lake
It rained pretty hard most of the night but when we woke up it was a clear blue sky day.
And the breakfast picture, yes all 5 of us fit just fine at the table (until my son starts to grow that is :) )
What a great camping trip and a perfect use for a truck camper. So much better than a motel or a long drive over and back the same day for a game.
