In most states it might be illegal to have a loaded firearm in the vehicle "if it is not in your immediate control" And if it is in your control, you most likely will need a Concealed Carry Permit.
Firearms, unloaded, in a locked container or in a locked portion of the vehicle not accessible from the passenger compartment with ammo stored separately with the same prohibitions can be transported anywhere in the USA.....But I'd stay out of NY, Chicago and DC
In many states a loaded firearm in a vehicle is evidence of poaching from a vehicle. In some states, leaning a loaded firearm against the vehicle while parked is the same as a loaded firearm in the vehicle. This will bring a sizable fine in a few states I know of.
