The federal Firearms Owners Protection Act (FOPA) will cover you while traveling between two places where you can legally possess the firearms. In transit the firearms have to be unloaded and in a locked container (firearms and ammo can be in the same locked container) out of immediate reach (trunk of car, trailer, etc.). I don't know if there are clear guidelines on whether FOPA would cover you during an extended stop (overnight or multiple days) in a place where a state pistol license is required.
I would be very concerned with respect to handguns in a state like NY and whether FOPA would cover you while camping. It would seem rational that FOPA would cover you during an overnight stop on your way to your final destination (unloaded and locked up) but as a temporary destination (multiple days) I wouldn't be surprised if that was not covered by FOPA, at least in the mind of the powers that be in NYS.
If you're doing anything but traveling through a state I would check the state laws before planning to spend the night or a few nights camping in that state.
