What are the output specs for the 4.6L?
Sure, it'll struggle compared to larger V8s currently (key word there) available, but compared with the motors everyone was happy with a generation ago, it's probably right there, especially with 6 gears behind it.
Comes down to expectations; if you expect to feel "as if the trailer's not there" you'll be disappointed. If you know going in that you're towing with a small V8 you may be satisfied.
Never seen the 80% rule discussed in any owner's manual for any vehicle I've ever owned.
