And I bet if there were forums back then there would be an old geezer with a 6.9L saying the amount you paid for your new "fancy" 97 was too much and doesn't want unreliable turbos or direct injection.

While that was nice I hated that $454.00 payment every month. It just turned over 205k on the clock. Outside of regular maintenance I had to replace an ERG valve and the radiator.

I am of the opinion that corporate America can take their over priced vehicles and shove it.

I could walk into almost any Ford dealer tomorrow and for around $64K or less drive away in a Crew Cab F350 SRW, 8' bed, 6.7 Lariat. Even though I agree with your "they can take their overpriced vehicles and shove it" statement whole heartedy, I would do that before throwing down $70K on an F150.

Ralph, I'm honored. It's my truck. I might let you tool it around when we meet up. If you are short, you might have a hard time getting in, sits pretty high. The OBS 350 sat up to begin with and I took it up an additional 6". Now that I'm older I wish I hadn't but too late to worry about that. My wife needs a step stool to get in...lol

Thats me and it's pristine. 97 350 XLT 4x4 Powerstroke long bed 4 door OBS. Bought it new in fall of 97 (special order). Everything works properly, air blows cold. I live in Michigan but it has never seen snow or salt, sleeps all winter in a heated garage. Only thing it does is haul my truck camper and haul my goose neck flatbed around. Paid 32 for it (still have the window sticker, Ford A plan. 5 more years and it qualifies as a 'Historical Vehicle' here in Michigan and I plan on having it then.

A new one like I have would be close to 90. Been offered 25 grand cash for mine. I just laugh and keep on trucking. Not for sale at any price.

I'd post a picture here but don't know how. It has a lot of drool factor.

Exactly and being an old guy I remember all the GTX's, SS 396/454's, 428 CJ's that were just old cars in the late '70's and '80's and generally had the...****...driven out of them. They were dented, bondo'd, leaking coolant, oil and tranny fluid...with worn clutches, needing front end work, etc.

I'm sometimes amazed when I go to a vintage car show and see how beautiful...some...of these old wrecks have become...on the outside anyways. I think to myself, how many have unrepaired frame damage, engines that need work, have 'new' bondo....

Sometimes it is just too expensive to do a full rebuild on every component in a resto effort and I don't think it will be any different with these modern performance trucks in 15-20 years +.

Still it is nice when one can afford brand new, the factory performance truck.

So, if I build a 450 HP 1979 F100 will I have a sleeper :B

Used to be high performance vehicles used to be GTO's, SS 396's, GTX...Torinos with the 428 CJ.

Then came the sedan move to front wheel drive, then suv/cuv's. Well you can still get a Mopar rear wheel drive muscle car, but other than that the rest are AWD.

The rise in pickup sales came about the same time as RWD sedans became less common. In a number of ways I've thought that the move (huge) to pickup trucks and now powerful pickups that in many cases are so far removed from the original pickup truck's purpose...being a work truck...is because if you want a rear wheel drive platform and a big engine...a V8...or a turbo V6...the pickup truck is the way to go.

Lot of guys like RWD platforms with big V8's (and in Ford's case turbo V6)...the modern pickup with a big engine is the modern muscle car.

Ford is just catering to the wants of the masses...and as a part of the masses...I say that Ford has captured the muscle car (truck) market and in addition...with the Limited...well if you got the bucks who wouldn't want velour seats and shag carpets...just kidding about that. Looks like a great truck, ...performance and luxury.

I think this idea will be the basis for my Master's Thesis. :B

Smart move on Ford's part and they will sell a lot more Limited models because of it. Badging only goes so far, add some actual performance improvements and it is easier for those in that high end half ton market to write a check. Doesn't shake my tree personally, but I think it is a great idea and would like to drive one.

Sounds interesting. But what I think is even better, is when 450 HP is mentioned, it really doesn't make people bat an eye. It wasn't that long ago that 450 HP was almost super car territory.
