Can't remember...

Hello all,
I have seen on here a way to winterize my TT that involves putting a gallon of anti freeze in my freshwater tank. I have done it this way before and know how to run water to the sinks and toilet etc. I also understand I can build up pressure and push a valve on the outside of my city water input causing antifreeze to blast out thus winterizing the fresh water input. I hope this makes sense. Does anyone do it this way ?
I don't have an air hose to blow the lines and do not want to pay 75 bucks to have my rig done.

Thanks, Dan
  • This season I used both the city water hook-up and the freshwater holding tank.

Thanks Terry, If I can hook directly to my water pump, and run antifreeze that way, do I still need to pump any into my city water hook-up ?

Not really. You would just need to let the pressure off some, ands press the button in the city water hookup to let antifreeze run thru it.

Now IF you, or the dealer has not run water thru the pump. Going thru the city water to winterize the whole system, is a good plan.

I just purchased a hand pump to hook to the city water hookup. A question...why couldn't I just hook that same hand up to the intake on the pump to get antifreeze in the pump ? So what I am basically saying is a two step method...

    1) Pump antifreeze in the city water hookup till it comes out my shower, toilet and one sink. (that's all I have in my very small trailer)

    2) Pump a small amount into the water pump so it is protected too.

    Would this work ?

Yes, however, IF you can pump it thru the pump to the sink, shower, and toilite. You don't have to go thru the city water with it.
In my case, I cannot get to the inlet side of the pump because of where it is mounted. So I'm going thru the city water this year. I pumped thru the pump from the fresh tank last year, and haven't ran any water thru it, so I don't need to winterize the pump this year. Going thru the city water is all I'll need.

  • Likely you will need MORE than a gallon of antifreeze but that is pretty much a standard way to winterize when no winterizing valve is installed. You could install one near the water pump for about 15.00 and cut down on your antifreeze use by quite a bit.
As for pushing the check valve in the pressure water connection, this is just fine but turn off the pump and release almost all pressure first to avoid blowing the seat on that check valve and causing issues next spring. It takes almost zero pressure for antifreeze to seep out the check valve. Unseat it and you will pump your fresh water out the city water connection next spring whenever you turn on your water pump.
  • Don't put it in your freshwater tank, just drain it and use a bypass kit. Its extremely easy to put in if you can access it. I was actually afraid to install one in mine at first, but I said why not and it was so simple. All connections only require hand tight.

You want to put the bypass kit between your freshwater tank and the pump.

    Here is my install.
Before, Hose from freshwater tank to the Left side (input) of pump.

After, Hose from freshwater goes to T and T goes to inlet of pump. You can see the clear fill hose just sits there (left side of pic) until I'm ready to use it.

You may notice an additional hose (white w/ red label) for ease of connection. That came from the HW store. Its a bathroom sink/toilet hose. 1/2" I believe... Someone this site gave me that tip and it worked great!

Don't forget the outdoor shower if you have one.

You can use a handpump to do your city inlet. Don't forget to open a faucet while your pumping it through.

Do you have a bypass setup for your hotwater tank? You can see the 3 valves on my HW tank. You should install that as well so you don't fill your HW tank up with antifreeze.

(Others prefer the blowing the lines out with air method)
  • I have done it that way. But in my case. It takes a lot more than 1 gal in the fresh tank, to get enough for the pick to send it to the TT.
