No need to remove the cap to haul, unless you need to dump things in the bed with a front loader. Your pluses probably outweigh any minuses. We haul a canoe and other items on top. Inside is set up for a break away camper. We can leave the TT behind and head for the hills for a night or two with just the truck. Yank it all out and throw in lumber, mulch whatever. Hose it out and put the bed or other stuff back in.
PS, it was well worth it to rotate the Jack 90 degrees and get a longer ball carrier so I could drop the tailgate for easy access to the bed. I don't have a photo but we also have a ladder that attaches to the tailgate and flips over to the side if the gate is a little high for you. We got ours at Tractor Supply.
