I meant to, but also forgot to answer the MPG part...
I take about a 1 MPG penalty pulling a car trailer. But pulling my Fiesta on a dolly, I'd gain half an mpg over many trips. I think the fiesta helped clean up the air coming off the back of the van, possibly some subconscious driving a little easier.
OMG, getting deeper in here....
Me and the rest of the world must be doing it wrong.....pulling any trailer and getting better mileage? Funniest thing I've never heard!
Was someone driving the fiesta, pushing your van? Lol
Weird but certainly possible... I used to have a 2005 Chevy 2500HD, 2WD regular cab work truck with 6.0 gas engine. I had a Maxidump insert installed. Great little landscaping truck but rarely saw over 12 mpg, usually less than 10. I had a 6x12 enclosed trailer that I took to California to pick up some furniture. On the way down, stuck in the right lane doing 55 most of the way, with a strong tailwind, got 15.9 mpg. Best mpg that truck ever got.
