Changing Fuel Filter

The trick to the O ring is to stretch it ever so gently so it stays in the groove when installing the new filter.

I think the grove for the large O-ring has a more shallow area and the o-ring seems to is harder to make it stay put.

Thanks everyone for the great thoughts. Next time I will remove the air intake rather than the wheel well skirt. We plan on traveling a bunch soon so I wanted to learn this task. Have a great day.

I was amazed this last time I changed the filter on my 07 classic, in and out in under 10 min. I usually spend 10 minutes just fighting with the o-ring on reinstall.

Hi, congrats you have saved quite a bit of money doing it yourself . I have an 06 also. My first change took me about an hour, but is about half hour now. The only thing I remove is the air intake boot. I use an oil filter wrench to take the filter off. The hardest part for me is the o ring on top of the filter never wants to stay in place.

Sounds like kids on the playground...I'm faster than you!
Glad you took the time to learn to changed it. Could be one of the most important things to know how to do when stranded on the side of the road...no matter how long it takes.

As you know it's always good to know how to change a fuel filter on the road. If you get a bad load of fuel you can be on your way again in a few minutes if you know how to change it yourself. If not, you're going to be waiting a while for road service.

To the OP. good for you. I also do the job myself and feel it is worth the time to know how to change the fuel filter. Time is not important so let the fast guys brag as it doesn't mean anything to you or me.

Takes me about an hour on my 2011 - have to loosen the wheel well liner. My 2005 was allot easier due to the location of the filter.
