I wouldn't bet on it. I think the new GM engine with the turbo will last just fine. When the Ford EcoBoost turbo 3.5 liter truck engine first came out, I thought good luck on this turbo or engine having any durability. It's been a number of years and I haven't heard of any durability issues with the Ford EcoBoost 3.5 and I'm sure it will be the same with the 2.7 liter GM turbo 4.
Is it really a
durability issue if the engine just
wears out? I never said it was going to
break. The concern is that it is going to wear out on a faster timeline than we normally expect from new vehicles, which should go 200k+ before they need valve jobs or piston rings.
If you're aware of getting naturally aspirated type
longevity from an Ecoboost pulling a load that'd normally be reserved for a small V8, I'm all ears.
My hypothesis as to why this isn't more prevalent is that those who are deliberately buying a new truck as a tow vehicle aren't choosing the Ecoboost engine. That's not the market it's aimed at. It's aimed at the occasional/casual trailering person who mostly uses the truck as a daily driver.
