Chevy Trailblazer, good tow vehical?

Anybody tow with a 6 cyl. Chevy Trailblazer? (could get by with a V-8 if necessary, love 6's)

We've got a 2004 22' Tahoe Lite we are currently towing with our 1965 Chevy Van w/292 inline 6. Been towing with it since 1988 all over western USA with no A/C. 25 years ago we could handle 100 degree temps. I still can but DW needs air.

So, since the '65 is my daily driver and will never get rid of it (DW says she is going to bury me in it), we've thought of selling her car, an '08 HHR and buying a medium size SUV that could tow the 4,000 lb Tahoe and also be her daily driver. That's why I'm considering an early 2000's Trailblazer.

If I can tear myself away from Chevys, maybe a Durango? (No fords or foreign cars).
  • I have a 2008 Trailblazer (the base LS) with the I-6, 273 hp engine. Dunno what rear gear ratio it has.

I tow a 20' pontoon and trailer... weighs about 3200-3500 pounds. I had thought about towing a light weight trailer given that it's supposed to be good for 5500 lbs. In practice, the hitch really drops even on the pontoon - about an inch or so - with 4 people in the car, I figure add another 1000 lbs with all the gear in the pontoon.

It's not great to tow with. I assume a 4000 lb trailer plus gear plus water plus people - you'd be right at the limit of 5500 if not over and I would not want to tow with a short wheelbase SUV and soft suspension.

Good luck finding a V8 trailblazer with anything less than 100k, those are the SS models. Even that would tow 6,000 - 6800 or so. Although they sit up higher, so I'm not sure if they stiffened the frame on that model. Mine has a softer ride than I expected from a "truck/SUV".
  • Th trailblazer will have more HP than the 292. so it "SHOULD" go faster up hills etc.

issue I see, is that the 292 usually only came in an 8 lug truck thru the years. So my question will be IF the trailblazer has the payload etc that you may or may not need for HW, People, Dogs etc in the TV of choice. Then again, back then, an 8 lug truck was a lower gvwr etc than todays trucks.....

    NOT! It was an I6
  • Not a very solid choice for a tow vehicle...short wheel base, soft suspension, low payload...

Probably not the answer you wanted to hear...but for a pop-up (tent trailer) it would work.
  • Not one I would choose. Tried towing my 20 footer for a couple of trips with a TB. Swapped for a Tahoe. Much more capable, roomy, and fuel economy was really no different from the I6 TrailBlazer.
