My son is looking at getting a 2019 Silverado 1500 truck. A lot of them on the lots have Chevy's new 2.7 turbo engine. This engine replaces the 4.3 V6. He won't be towing a camper with it. He is wondering about the reliability of this new engine. Right now he has a 2017 Silverado with the V6. Any info on this new engine will be greatly appreciated and I'll pass it on to him.
Other inquiries like this haven't netted much information and if that holds true for this post YouTube has a lot of professional reviews. I don't own anything Chevrolet but my impression of their 2.7 turbo is that it is a good engine, not a great engine. In side by side tests 5.3 V8 has often come out better, even on fuel economy. When Chevy compares it to Ford engines they always choose the base naturally aspirated V6 from Ford, not Ford's 2.7 turbo. Head to head Ford's 2.7 turbo beats the Chevy on horsepower, torque, fuel economy and towing capacity plus it has been on the market much longer and has a well proven track record.
To re-iterate, it seems to be good engine, just not a market leader. As long as he doesn't compare to other 2019 engines he will probably be happy with it.
