Chipping Your 6.7litre Dodge Ram

G'day,

What are your thoughts on chipping my 2012 Ram 3500 diesel 6.7ltr?

What chip upgrades are you using?

Are there negatives & positives?

Can I increase my fuel economy, apart from less pressure on the right foot?

Thanking You All, in anticipation, Doug

    You bet.

    It happened to me.

Dealer put a restricted warranty on a RAM with less than 6k miles "due to a chip" without even taking the truck off the tow truck hook.

The Cummins spun a rod bearing and a restricted warranty means you will pay for everything. Big bucks!

So your truck spun a rod bearing? Or are you saying "if" it spins a rod bearing?

BTW, it would be lot more accurate for people to refer to this as "using a programmer" since there haven't been "Chips" in many years.

I am always intrigued as to why people do this, these new diesels are monsters right out of the box.
The only Folks that complain about reliability of diesels are those that chip them...(or have the old 6.0l).

But Hey...it's your $50k to blow!
    Have fun!
Please youtube the aftermath for us...

X2 Could not have said it better.

  • Just for giggles search the lawsuit EPA won against (at least one) tuner manufacturer(s).
  • I have a Edge box on my '03 Dodge/Cummins 5.9 305/555 HO NV5600 truck. Its just a 40 hp/80-90 torque programmer for towing and one of the first that Edge made available for the new HPCR engine. I can't say I picked up any mpgs but it sure woke the HO up in the 1600-2000 rpm range in OD pulling 10k-16k GN trailers.
The truck has 221k miles now and no issues. Lots of internet myth/stretching actual usage issues when programmers are brought up.

Check out a couple of the Dodge truck forums such as cumminsforum.com or tdr.com or dieseltruckresourse.com and others for more input on a specific programmer. Some are mild like my old Edge for towing duties and some are for hot roddin' and huge hp/torque increases.
Most programmers come with a EGT gage but if it doesn't be sure you install one. I use the dual gage Westach (boost and EGT). Very handy to drive with for best mpgs and as a diagnostic tool for the engine.

  • H&S mini max. Guage and tuner in one guy that previously owned my truck put one in and it seems pretty neat to me adjust power on the move.
