Another perfect example of how laws are slow to keep up technology. A 55/65w bulb in the 60's wasn't the aircraft landing light brightness some of these modern bulbs produce. How about LED's? When they become the new norm for headlights, can you imagine how awful a 55W LED will be to look at in oncoming traffic? The law should define brightness, not watts.
It's to the point where I look forward to the occasional old car that has lights you can stand to look towards. It seems all of the manufacturers are in a headlight arms race. The main reason people think their own headlights are dim is because their pupils are slammed shut from the constant onslaught of too-bright oncoming lights...especially those horrible blue ones. My 2002 Jeep has pretty "dim" lights but they're much brighter than any of my previous older vehicles. I'd rather have the guy coming at me able to see than me.
IMHO, Ford used to be the worst (bright) but I think Toyota holds the title now.
