Chrysler recalling 1.2 million Ram trucks

Just read this and may affect some owners on this forum

DETROIT – Chrysler is recalling about 1.2 million Ram trucks to fix front-end problems that could lead to steering troubles.

The company announced three recalls on Friday. It wants to inspect the trucks and says only 453,000 will likely need repairs.
Chrysler said Friday in a statement that it knows of six crashes and two injuries involving the 2008 to 2012 Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks that are being recalled, and one crash with no injuries from the other recalled models.

  • The first case covers 842,400 Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks from 2003 through 2008. Chrysler says 116,000 were repaired with tie-rods in the steering system that could be out of alignment. Since I replaced the outer and inner tie rods myself I wonder if they it will be affected?

We just bought my DD a 1998 Dodge Avenger ES that had a recall for lower ball joints. Took it in and they replaced the complete lower control arm, and bolts. Did a wheel alignment at no cost to us. Works for me. The car does only have 38,000 miles on it.

  • Our last vehicle with grease fittings in the front end was a '97 Chevy Astro with the uncommon factory heavy duty suspension.

Racked up 180K +....no problems. Bought new, a big '07 Buick sedan and now have 126K + on it....no greae fittings on the suspension and no problems with the front end as of yet.

I would rather have grease fittings for sure.

But I'm starting to wonder if my ideas about what constitutes 'good' maintenance are outmoded .

I still change oil and filter with Quaker State...regular dino oil every 3000 miles....even though the oil change computer on my Buick advises I could go much further.

Maybe it's the same with suspension components without grease fittings...perhaps technology has evolved to where no grease is fine.

Maybe it's because I learned how to service a vehicle in the 1960's and my service 'mentality' is still stuck in the 1960's with what worked with '60's Chevies, Fords, Mopars, VW's and Volvo.

    Don't know ?

Not they're strong point over the years. Mine also had one recall for the exact same problem, but wasn't effected. I never have liked some of the non grease parts or almost impossible to find lube points :H No grease equals problems to me.

I used to feel the same way.

VW Diesel pickup with over 300K no grease joints and no problems.

98 Ram 380K on U joints and still going strong.

86 C20 PU way over 300k and original U joints.

11 Ram not a single grease fitting, not even on the front driveline like it says it has with over 36K and no problems.

    Just my opinion!

It has a grease fitting, you're not looking hard enough.

    NO it does NOT !!!!!!!!!!!

I had the head Chrysler warranty rep and head mechanic in Pahrump, NV in May look for it and it is not there. The head mechanic says not all have it. The rep agreed it is not there.

I am very mechanical and it was driving me crazy because so many said it was there.
  • What I don't understand is why they don't do a recall for the front ends that have the death wobble. Man my 2012 Ram 1500 just about throws you off the road, if you hit a bump or railway track. There have been many wrecks. They say it is up to the owner to get the front end beefed up. Macktee
  • The front driveline has one, gotta use a needle fitting. My 2013 has one as well. It's a real bugger to find but it's there.
