I must say I'm very happy to finally not own a diesel that requires this very specific oil (others will cause rough running and/or injector damage), coolant additives, fuel additives to hopefully keep the CP4 happy, etc. Kind of like feeling good about cutting ties with that hot but high maintenance blond girlfriend! Lol! :B
Have you been drinking the ethanol or just simply burning it in the engine?
The problem being discussed here is the fact that government regulations have forced the reduction of anti-wear additives from motor oil. Kinda like forcing the use of ethanol to lower your fuel mileage.
Folks that speak of past experiences have not come to grips with the current reality. The wear problem was not an issue just six months ago.
What other engine manufacturer other than Ford has issued a warning about this? - LynnmorExplorer

The brands (Rotella, Motorcraft, Cononcco Phillips, Valvoline) I listed earlier in the 15W40 version did not reduce anti wear additives and in some cases these additive were increased.
For our trucks, the normal oil is 10W-30. 15W-40 is for temperatures above 20 degrees. I see temperatures below zero at times so there are few options left.
There's a lot of 5w 40 syn oils out there as well. OOD (obsessive oil disorder) can get the best of some though and they get lost in an oil debate when they could be out changing the oil in their vehicle.......
You did see the list of approved oils I posted earlier? Use whatever you want, I like to make an educated decision.
Yes, I did thanks. Let's just agree that our educated opinions come from different experience.
I've been around, maintinaed, repaired, operated and/or owned literally I'd say a thousand Diesel engines in various forms from 100T haul trucks and 200klb excavators to pickups, gen sets and light plants. Even had a few diesel roto tillers to keep running back in the day. I'll stick by it's not what you put in for oil (within reason) rather whether you maintain the engine properly or not.
SOME mfg reccomendations are totally valid, some not so much, some not at all. Kind of like 3/4 ton truck payload discussions....
Cheers!

Then go with either Motorcraft 5w40 or Valvoline Premium Blue 5w40.
I may go with the Valvoline after my two plus years supply is exhausted. Note that the Motorcraft 5W-40 is not on the approved list.
That's because the Motorcraft 5W-40 is still CJ4 rated.- Grit_dogNavigator

The cold flow viscosity between a 5W40 and a 10W30 are very similar.
Yes, but 10W-30 is not recommended for use with bio-diesel. Since it is almost impossible to stay away from the bio when traveling, we are back to square one.
