The roof material is designed to chalk. The layer of chalk acts as a 100% effective sunscreen for the unexposed material under it. Washing the chalk off means that a fresh layer of roofing material is exposed to weathering, and chalks sooner, and is subsequently washed away.
The #1 manufactuer of roofing material for RVs is Carlise. They sell it to Dicor, and it is sold to the RV industry under the Dicor label.
Years ago Dicor did NOT recommend washing of the roof. They actually frowned on it, in their frequently asked question section. But the RV owners kept asking them how to do it.
Dicor decided that this was a money making marketing opportunity and roof washing products were created to fill the demand.
A visit to the Carlise website reveals that the same material is made by them for the commercial building market. Washing is NOT required and is only recommended for the white material to remove dirt if maximum reflectivity is desired.
Mine gets washed when it rains.
