There is no reason in the world why a family can't choose to 'pack light' (300 to 500 lbs) and carry a minimal amount of water.
Where does this "typical family has 1,000 pounds of gear" statistic come from, anyway? Can anyone cite any research or hard data to back up this assertion? Or is it one of those, "I read it on the internet, so it must be true" type of facts?
