Considering 21' TT w/slide & V8 SUV

After catarac surgery and now floaters after retina tears in both eyes which affect my vision, I am going to have to sell my Class C and am considering a 21' with slide with possibly a Dodge Durango 5.7L, Toyota Fourunner or Jeep Grand Cherokee all with V8's. Its the MH width that I am having trouble with at 101" whereas the TT would be 8 feet or less in width and easier to drive in narrow areas and construction zones (they are all over the place & too scary with tractor trailers wandering in lanes). I figured for safety I would try to stay under the tow capacity by 1800 to 2000 lbs and some 21' TT are around the 3500 lb mark. So I thought fully loaded to be under 5000 lb. and thus 1800 to 2000 lb under the 7000 lb limit of these suv's. Is this a reasonable set-up to consider? Thanks for your feedback!

Dave.

  • I pulled a 5000lb TT with a 2004 5.7l Durango for 10 years. Did a very good job.

Not sure how well the newer Durango will do. The 2004-2010 Durango's have solid axles and a very stiff frame great for towing.
  • new Jayco, Jay Feather SLX 18SRB
    dry weight 3453 lbs
    300 lbs hitch weight
    1 slide out
    21 feet 10 inches
    7 feet wide
  • Reasonable combo, yes. I dissagree with the reasoning stated for going to a narrower one. 5" narrower trailer vs. your MH will not be. You have less control over a trailer tracking or moving a few inches vs. a motorhome. Now some shorter TTs are also 7' and 7.5', so that may be more useful in practice. The trailer will still move around.
  • Sounds good. A buddy has a 23 footer one slide he pulls with a Durango V8.
