Based on the GM towing guide for a Regular cab, SRW, diesel, 4X4 I would loose 100 pounds towing capacity by going to a 3500 vs. a 2500. For the added cost it doesn't make sense to me IMHO.
so the max gooseneck towing for a 2500 is 17,500 assuming a 15% pin you'd have a pin weight of 2625. The truck on paper has a payload capacity of 3079; so on paper you have 454 pounds of payload.
the max gooseneck for a 3500 is 17,400. Assuming a 15% pin you have 2610 in weight. The payload is 4585 leaving you with 1975 pounds of payload.
seems like a no brainer to me but hey the extra 1 ton of payload may not be worth the extra $500.
