At the end of the day it more than washes out. Check the values of a diesel and compare that to a gasser. The diesels hold their value better so the extra you paid comes back to you.
Extra cost comes back to you only if you can find someone to buy a high-mileage diesel for the amount you want to sell it for after you're finished driving it.
The rest of the truck has to still be in excellent condition after all those miles too - and as often as not, it isn't.
not to mention that on that "more economical" diesel, you are paying interest on about 10-20K more$$$.
