Covers for storage REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE

SO, I am thinking about getting a cover for my hybrid. I discussed this plan with the head of service at a very good RV dealer. She stated that in Colorado due to the high winds that the repeated movement (even if minor) will wear spots in the RV and she recommended some sort of permanent coating over having a cover. What are your experiences?

  • Have been covering mine for 7 winters so far with no damage to the trailer. It's parked on the side of the house where it gets all the wind. I do see where wind limits the life of the covers, you have to be pretty careful to do something on all the sharp edges, I use strips of indoor/outdoor carpet with the soft side towards the trailer. I also put a daisy chain of cargo straps about half way up the sides around the whole trailer after the cover is on to limit billowing. I got 6 years from the 1st cover.
  • When we bought our fiver, with filon exterior, the factory service guy, where we picked it up recommended that it should NOT be covered!
  • I used a cover on a PUP that we bought new in '93. After about 3 years a wind storm tore it up. We had the PUP for a total of 10 years and it looked like new when we sold it. We just traded a '03 HTT that we also bought new. Never covered the entire trailer, just the tires and A/C. Aside from some shrinking decals and faded bed door, the trailer looked pretty good, nice and shiny and no blemishes.. I kept it waxed. The dealer sold it in less than a month. So I'm not sold on expensive covers.
  • I store mine in a covered storage lot rather than use an RV cover. Had my Starcraft hybrid for 9 years and just sold it last month. Still looked brand new. Decals in perfect shape, no peeling, fading etc. The trailers stored out in the sun with a cover or not all look faded badly after a few years with decals peeling, color fading etc. I'm in hot AZ where the blazing sun bakes so could be quite different in cooler climates.
  • We'll be ordering a cover for our new TT this fall. It'll be the same as the Adco we ordered from CW for our ROO 23SS. Benefits are that it's breathable, which is a priority, it's a soft fabric so no scuffing from the wind movement and with reasonable care, it should last many years. The one we got for our '07 ROO started it's life here with the winter of '06 and when we passed it on to the new owners, it looked almost as good as new. Absolutely agree that they are trying to sell you something expensive that they make a tidy profit margin on. You should be able to get an Adco, appropriate for your area, for around $250 give or take and when CW has their annual fall sale, they include tire covers at no additional charge.
  • I'll agree that a high wind location probably increases the chance of problems. It will definitely limit the life of the cover. I'll be using mine for the 6th season, but my location is very protected from the wind.
  • I cover our Southwind in the winter. We get a lot of winter wind and I've never had any damage from the cover rubbing the paint.
I agree with Chuck_S. They want to sell you something.
  • Sounds like an attempt to sell you something with a high profit margin...
