Since we have already sent the deposit to the dealer selling us our AR-One 15RB this is probably a waste of time, BUT. Does any one have anything bad to say about the Starcraft AR-One series of trailers? It is being purchased for our annual trips to see the Moms, we hate hotels, in ND and MN so it will accumulate about 4,000 miles per year. Having come out of a diesel pusher we know this is a huge step back but will make traveling with the rescued Lab much easier.

  • tatest,
We looked at ALL of the fiberglass trailers and a used CampLite but could not justify the price. The 15RB has all the necessities including the largest bathroom for the category at a reasonable price. Since the Moms are 90 and 94 we think this trailer should provide the best bang for the buck. This is probably the first 5 figure plus, barely, purchase where price was the primary driver. We would like to make the trip in a DP but for 6 to 8 days a year on the road we decided it was stupid to hang on to a 6 figure depreciating asset. We took a $40,000 hit after 4 years of use so we think we got off easy and with an extremely low purchase price (103 OTD on a 158 MSRP) the DP served its purpose.

  • For the way you want to use it the AR-One and the related Jayco SLX lines should be fine. They are lightly built and make equipment compromises (window A/Cs, minimum size and capacity for refrigerator and heater) to reach that weight and price point.

I've seen a buyer who thought this would work for extended living (snowbirding) come up disappointed when they tried to use it that way. The complaint is here somewhere, TT or Beginner forum). But the equipment standard is no different from pop-ups or A-frames and those also get extended use. Just a question of what are your expectations.
  • I think the dog would enjoy the DP more than a small trailer... but am guessing you think they would enjoy the trailer more than the hotel..
  • The low CCC does not bother us. We will have enough water in the tank to flush the toilet at lunch, a few paper plates, 2 chairs, and a few clothes. It is not like we are heading out for nine months or a year. Thanks so far for the thoughts. Please keep them coming.

  • Have you talked to your pet about this? j/k:B

Congrats on your new trailer! Starcraft has excellent customer support, a phone call to headquarters is about all that's needed and you should get a voice on the end of the line instead of a menu and and a voice mail center (unless things have radically changed in the last couple of years).

I hope you get the kind of longevity of my Starcraft--the Hilton will be 44 years old, this year. If walls could talk....;)

I can't tell you anything specific about the Starcraft AR-One series other than to highlight an issue with any of these very light weight trailers designed to meet a GVWR of just 3500 lbs, or less - minimal cargo carrying capacity. In the case of the 15RB it's listed as 650 lbs on the base trailer but account for the weight of a battery, propane gas in the tank(s), some water in the system, and any options or accessories your particular unit may have and you may well be left with very little capacity for all your personal cargo. Coming from a DP I could see how this might present a real challenge for you.
