When we bought the new 2500 2015 Chevy long bed for work we noticed the bed rails were raised in the center. Thought it was a defect at first. Looked at others and discovered what you're talking about, a design change. Since it just works for a living and won't carry a camper it's of no consequence to us. Can see an issue with a camper. Engineers like architects often don't live in the real world it would seem.
