I've said it before and I'll say it again. Bringing firewood (other than obviously infected with bugs) into a CG does NOT kill the trees, spread infestations, or cause global warming.
If handled PROPERLY, it doesn't matter one bit.
Bring your pre-split wood in a container with a lid (think Rubbermaid), keep it in that container, and only pull each piece out as you need it and place it DIRECTLY ON THE FIRE.
Fact 1: Bugs burn
Fact 2: Burnt bugs don't spread
Fact 3: Burnt wood doesn't have any live bugs
Wonder why the "quarantines" never work? Because they are ineffective and ignore the key component- EDUCATION. Teaching safe handling of firewood is effective.
If you want to have an actual quarantine, then any vehicle, camper, or gear that has been in an "infected" area should not be allowed into a non-infected area. Bugs can hitch a ride in all the nooks and crannies of your vehicle, camper, tarps, storage areas, etc.
Anything else is a misguided attempt to do "something" even if it is ineffective.
"Local firewood" ? If you transport and don't properly handle local firewood that has the infestation, it spreads and increases the infestation, too. It isn't like the trees are immune to the "local strain" of infestation!
The problem is NOT a communicable disease in a true sense. It is the INFESTATION that spreads destruction (and disease).
I say burn and eradicate the infested wood. Handle it properly and destroy the incubation areas at the same time. Ignoring infected wood only allows the infestation to propagate.
Don't agree? How long have these bans been in place? Are we any closer to eliminating the problem/infestations?
Gotta look at the big picture to define a solution, not try to find a way to make people feel good and turn a profit while doing it ;)
