With a automatic tranny you are asking for problems chipping a 7.3. A 99 7.3 was only 235 HP. My 02 7.3 with the ZF 6 speed came stock at 275 HP and I never chipped it in the 14 years I owned it and often pulled 20K equipment trailers with 3.73 axles.
The 'trick' to any slush box is one, running modified clutch packs, 2, having the shortest duration between ratio selections and pack engagement and 3, keeping it cool at all times. Heat kills a slush box, so keeping fluid temps under control is important, not only with a modified engine but with a stock engine when working it and the transmission.
My modified E4 has a huge transmission cooler on it, SVO installed it in 98.
I never cared for Fords manual boxes because of their hydraulic, non adjust able clutch actuation.
