Death Valley - Scotty's Castle CLOSED due to Flooding

We've had an unusually wet Fall out here with lots of flooding in the desert. Heads up for any of you campers planning a fall/winter visit to Scotty's Castle in Death Valley as recent flooding made a mess of things.

Recent Flooding effects roads into Scotty's Castle

Suggest you check the NPS Web site before committing to visiting Scotty's castle.

Happy Camping!!
  • Did it flood the Dunes?
250 miles west we pray for rain for 10 months.
  • We certainly hope the flowers will be out in force this year.
We have had some very heavy rain storms, that have even taken a couple of lives this last two weeks. I will be driving the "Mojave Road" offroad historical trail the first week of December, and the last time we went in December, we were snowed in, and had temps in the 20's for part of the trip. NOT FUN in a tent while camping from a JEEP.
Yes, the area is part of the "East Mojave Preserve", and is very rough. So 4x4 is always necessary. This year we have heard that some of the trail has been washed away by the flash floods. In particular, the "Chute" from the roadway to the Rock Springs area wash.
Also that the "Lake Bed" of Soda Lake, is completely soaked, so no vehicles are allowed to enter, and who wants to be bogged in an alkaline salt lake anyway!!
I would imagine that the river crossing at Afton Cyn is also flooded, and impassable right now.
