Detachable Power Cord?

A detachable cord sounds intriguing, and maybe someday I'll give one a try. But for now, I'll keep my $90. The retractable cord on my unit works just fine.

Do like the detachable better had 3 trailers with the push in type. Current is detachable.....

Either is subject to theft our dealer had someone come in one night and pull out/off all of the push in cords so they had a job rewiring all the trailers with push in cords. :(

I have a push in hard mounted cord in my 2004 Gulfstream TT. I am going to change it to a receptacle on the trailer and a detachable cord.

However I am going to do it with the MARINCO marine type cord and receptacle as this has the screw on housing over the plug. This keeps out water and dirt. And it insures a proper connection every time. And is the best strain relief for your cord you can get.

We have had both and we really like the detachable cord. I have a milk crate that I roll the cord up in and this year I made myself a check list of things to make sure they are done before leaving home and leaving the park. One of the things on he list states electric cord disconnected from trailer and put on truck. It helps me to remember everything and if any box is not checked before I leave I go back and check it.

The OP never indicated he would ... he's just asking about the advantages / disadvantages of each method.

I think power cords are most likely to get stolen in storage vs at a campground. My detachable cord can be locked away in storage vs a pull out that can be cut off completely. Also when using a generator I use a short cord to the rv vs the full 25' shore power cord.

I also hated pushing the 30a cord back into its hole!!!

I had an attached 30a cord on our first trailer and now have a detachable 50a cord on the new one. There are pros and cons to each in my mind:

1. Detachable was quicker to deploy and pack up. There is nowhere to easily store the detachable cable on the side of the TT where the power connector is, so I lug the heavy 50a cable to the other side, where it lives in a plastic bin on the bathroom floor during travel/storage.

2. The attached cord decided to feed itself out onto the highway once. By the time I was made aware of it, it was half destroyed. I fixed that problem, but obviously it wouldn't happen with a detachable.

3. It would have been impossible to get to the storage cabinet in the event that the cable ever needed total replacement. It was behind the bed in the rear of the TT, and I saw no way to access it short of dismantling walls. That being said, I have no evidence that anything crawling into that compartment would have found its way into the house proper.


So I'm basically on the fence as to which I prefer. I see both sides of the argument. Perhaps I might change my mind after lugging the cable 'round the trailer a few dozen more times. :)

I have had both types and prefer the detachable. Since I need several extension cables anyway (post is typically 75 feet or further on most of the sites I cam at) I already have several cords to store

Ditto on both of the above.

Jamming the cord back in the box is an exercise in futility, and the colder the outside temp is, the harder it is to get the &*(@#^ cord in the box.

I've also scuffed up my hands on the interior edges of the door opening of the box trying to reach in a rearrange the cord to get it to fit.

Removable cord - weather tight! Also, mice and other 4 legged critters can climb up the power cord and make their way in through the cord entry like they can on a cord that is jammed in to a box.
