The idea long ago was fullfilling public service was a duty, like joining the military. You do your term, do your part, and go back and live within the laws you helped enact. However when your permenant job becomes politics, a huge perspective is lost. Citizens, when their representatives achieve positions on powerful committees, bringing things back to their area (bridge to no where for example), many dont want to lose "their guy" and so "forever" legislatures are born. I am perplexed how these people earn millions of dollars in politics. Many become multimillionares while in "service" to their country. Their wages are not that significant to account for that kind of increase.
