All the government has done is demand that we pollute the environment a little less. The fines are levied on those that insist on pollution. Same as you can be cited for littering. This is no different than tipping over a dumpster so all the trash can wash out to the ocean.
The government, lead by an activist who has been caught lying many times before, is demanding that the manufacturers meet a number, but did not think to consider or reevaluate whether or not what it took to meet that number created more pollution when all things are considered like the creating of the DEF industry and all of the plastic containers. It created long term pollution in order to curb short term pollution that only had slight health impacts in heavily populated areas. If the people living in these heavily populated areas would disperse, then such emissions laws for the type of emissions emitted by diesels would not be needed. All the while allowing others like Elon Musk emit the same pollution as millions of these trucks because they have enough money to have the laws changed to benefit them.
Fining someone for purposely rolling coal is one thing that you and I can agree on. However, I will not agree with you that the EPA made the best choice for the people and the planet when it comes to diesel emissions regulations over the years. Some was needed like the 92 and 98 regulations, but after 2004, what it took to get to these numbers did more harm than good especially when you consider that the differences between the 2004 and current numbers is so small. Less than 2 g/bhp/hr for PM and less than 1 g/bhp-hr for NOx. Direct injected gas engines emit more PM than the 2004 diesel laws, but they are given a pass since the regulations for gas engines allow them to emit more.
