I am concerned about the diesel fuel I put into my 3500 Ram. It seems like more and more fuel providers like Flying J, pilot,WalMart, and Loves are selling the biofuels. SO far I just find another source like BP, Shell and the like. The Cummins manual recommends no bio fuels greater than 5%. Should I be concerned, what do you do.
While I do not have a Cummins engine in either my VW Jetta TDI nor my Jeep Libby CRD, both VW and Jeep also recommended "no more than 5%" biodiesel. The VW has 160,000 miles on it, at least 30,000 on biodiesel up to 100%. The Jeep has 180,000 miles on it, with about 80,000 miles on up to 50% biodiesel. Neither vehicle has had problems directly related to biodiesel use.
Both have had problems, but I can't blame a bad radio or a blown head gasket (overheated while running petrodiesel, towing, uphill in 100 degree weather) on biodiesel.
Both still have original injectors, and those would be the first things afflicted.
So, I wouldn't worry about it, if I were you. Later Cummins engines have recommendations for up to 20% biodiesel. The VW forums I hang out in have zillions of folks who've run many thousands of miles on varied concentrations of biodiesel, and the consensus is pretty much "drive more, worry less."
