I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the increased initial purchase of a diesel truck vs gas, either. Defraying that cost has to be factored in, too. Oil changes are about three times as expensive.
Will you get the initial difference on the back end when you sell it? Maybe. A lot depends on how long you hold it. The longer you hold it, the less that difference will be.
I would really worry about the reliability of buying ANY new truck; gas or diesel. I tend to buy trucks that are 3-4 years old and have a proven track record of reliability or the issues are easily fixed. The diesel truck sites on the internet have saved me THOUSANDS by being proactive in replacing poor original equipment components.
I'm not sure I drive enough miles anymore to justify the diesel advantage. I have never driven very fast with my TC on; 60-65, so a gasser could probably handle that easily. If I am holding up traffic on a grade, I pull over, rather than gunning it and dropping my MPGs way down. I'm retired; I have all the time in the world. Getting to a campsite 15-30 minutes later is no big deal.
