We carried our first camper on a F350 with a V10. Although the truck had substantial power, it still worked hard on the steep grades. However, I found going down the hills the most challenging because it took alot of work to hold back the load.
Now, we carry a camper on a F350 diesel and it is way more fun uphill and down. Diesels provide much more engine braking.
In my opinion, the cost of DEF and oil changes are immaterial when compared to the upfront cost of any truck and the fuel ... gas or diesel.
When we bought our diesel truck, we noticed that the new fancy foo foo F150's (I believe they're called Platinum) cost as much as our diesel. Try putting a 4,000 lb camper on one of those grocery store trucks.
