I read about these 200-300 thousand mile pickups, and I am sure there are some, but.... Do these high milers come with bodies, suspension, steering, and other components to match? I have driven a lot of miles in pickups and never had one I enjoyed driving after about 125,000 miles. I suspect most people who drive $50-60k pickups get rid of them long before they reach triple digits, whether they are gas or diesel powered. At 15,000 miles per year, it would take twenty years to reach 300,000 miles. There are lots of reasons to own pickups, but driving the same one for twenty years is not one for me.
My current daily driver is a 2007 cummins dually with 170k on the odometer. I traded my 1999 Powerstroke with 300+k on it for the dually. The Powerstroke ran like new and all I ever had to do to it was one transmission rebuild.
I also have an 1989 cummins, with who knows how many miles, that I drive frequently with no issues what so ever...if you can ignore the purple paint job.
Our previous truck was 1992 diesel (still have it, still runs fine), the problem is everything else but the motor is starting to have issues and she just looks real rough.
There may be exceptions but 99% of the folks who plunk down $60k on a new truck won't keep it past 10yrs, so the million mile motor is irrelevant (we just bought a 10 yr newer gas truck and while looking there was almost no premium on the diesel trucks that were comparable). Not to mention the difference in long term reliabilty is much different in a 2012 vs a 1992. Diesel is more complicated and subject to expensive break downs and gas has become more reliable.
