Depending upon the terrain and the amount of wind blowing my MPG with the diesel engine varies from 9.5 to 13.5 MPG. I have to plan on 9.5 MPG as we go where AAA does not, nor is there cell phone reception much of the time.
I am planning a trip to Glacier NP via eastern CA, eastern OR, Idaho, and western Montana. These areas have few people, few towns, and few gas stations, much less gas stations with diesel. It stands to reason that when you are in states where the total population is much less than for many cities San Jose, Seattle, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, Boston, Phoenix) that there will be fewer gas stations that can sell enough fuel to stay in business.
It is different on major interstates that support the trucking industry. If you don't mind doing all your traveling on the interstates and only going where they go then it is true that one can find diesel. But that is one heck of a limitation in the western states.
I have a diesel truck now but my next truck will definitely have a gas engine (and 4.10 gears).
Just out of curiosity I looked at a back road route from Yuba City to Glacier NP and the longest stretch that I found without diesel was 150 miles. I know from experience you will not have trouble finding diesel in this area of MT as I use to live there (in Kalispell). When I lived there I had 2 diesel trucks and never had any problem finding fuel.
The route out of Yuba City was highway 49 to Calpine. Out of Calpine I took Westside Rd (is that back road enough) to CR A23 to Beckwourth. Then Beckwourth Geneses Rd. to highway 395. Then 395 to Riley then caught highway 20 into Ontario. Then followed Interstate 84 to highway 30 and then east on it. Then 30 to 52 To Horseshoe Bend onto 55 north to Lowman then on 21 to Stanley, Id. This ties into highway 75 north to highway 93. Then highway 93 well take you right into Kalispell, MT.
By the way highway 93 is a neat drive north through ID and into southern MT before you get to Hamilton, MT. From this point on it starts to pickup traffic north all the way to Kalispell.
So unless you have a very small tank or get terrible fuel mileage I see no where you should have any troubles with fuel on this route. At 9.5 MPG it only takes 16 gallons to go the 150 miles.
ON EDIT: This is looking for diesel only. Where Gasbuddy couldn't any fuel (gas or diesel) I used Google earth to see where the fuel stations were and if they showed diesel or not. No this is not saying that there aren't any stations along the way but not in towns as I never looked for them.
