True statement - the transmission tunnel was too small.
At the time I bought my '02 Duramax, there was speculation that GM would add the Duramax/Allison as an option to the large SUV line. Apparently the reason they didn't do so was because the Allison was too large to fit under the bodies.
The folks that do these conversions get around the clearance issues with a generous lift kit.
Not True.

- Bionic_ManExplorerYou are more likely to be able to find a diesel Ford Excursion.
I have seen a few Suburbans that people swapped a CTD into them as well. - kaydeejayExplorer

Biggest downside is the Mega $$$$$$$$$$$$$ - I don't believe I've ever seen or heard of a diesel Tahoe, and the Suburbans are rare.
- intheburbsExplorerNo, the last OEM diesel Burb was model year 1999.
There are several companies that do conversions - DuraBurb is one. They graft a Duramax/Allison powertrain into a 2500 Burb. Upside is huge increase in towing power and an OEM look with everything working as it should. Downside is a loss of payload capacity due to the added weight of the engine and transmission.
