diesel tow trucks

a neighbor came by today while I was out in the front yard and we got to talking about his truck. I asked if he had a (I believe this is right) a DEH tank on his truck, he said no it was only a 2004 but he was told by another guy who did not like to spend the money on the oil to put in it and the guy just filled the tank with water. said no harm to the truck so far. is this a smart thing to do? seems like the truck will have problems eventually besides being illegal.
  • Actually 2 cycle oil is the best to use because it is designed to burn and lubricate. Any Cummins up to the end of the 5.9's in 2007 are fine to add about a 1/2 quart per tank.
  • Some people used to add engine oil to the gas tank to increase the lubricity. This might of helped through the 80's? One could probably get away with it through the early 1998 build Dodge 12v engine. No manufacturer recommends this on any engine today. I would really avoid doing this on the common rail diesel. 2003+ Dodge diesel is common rail.
  • 2004 didn't have DEF tanks. They didn't come into play until 2010 or so.
  • that's what I needed to know. I thought it was a little strange. sure they have thought of the adding of water and other liquids.

DEF is an acronym for diesel exaust fluid. It is a precise mixture of water and urea and the truck has sensors that will put the truck into limp mode if something other than DEF is being used.It costs about $.30 per 100 km to use DEF so it is not really that big of deal.
